Obituary for Donald McCallion

Donald McCallion, age 82, of Elkhart, Kansas died Thursday, September 4, 2014 at Baptist St. Anthony Hospice in Amarillo, Texas. He was born June 14, 1932 in Ingalls, Kansas the son of Thomas and Emma (Salm) McCallion.

Don grew up in Cimarron, Kansas moving to Dodge City in the 8th grade. After graduating from high school, Don served four years in the United States Air Force, rewiring airplanes. He married Frieda Berend on November 28, 1956 in Dodge City, Kansas. They moved to Elkhart in 1966. He worked as a service representative for 32 years for Peoples Natural Gas. His hobbies included gardening and woodworking, and playing bingo. Don was a family man. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, children, and grandchildren. Don was a volunteer for the fire department, and member of the American Legion Point Rock Post #3162, Lions Club, Knights of Columbus and St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. He was a 3rd Degree Knight and enjoyed serving his church.

Survivors include his wife, Frieda of their home; son, Dennis McCallion of Elkhart, Kansas; daughters, Sandra Stence of Red Lion, Pennsylvania, Janet Wood of Chandler, Oklahoma, Brenda Simons of Topeka, Kansas; eight grandchildren, seven step-grandchildren and seven step-great-grandchildren.

Don is preceded in death by his parents, brother, Raymond McCallion; and sisters, Christine McCart, and Mary Rose Wolfe.

Rosary and vigil service will be held at 7:00 PM on Sunday, September 7, 2014 and funeral mass will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday, September 8, 2014, at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in Elkhart, Kansas with Reverend Francis Khoi Nguyen officiating. Interment will follow at the Elkhart Cemetery in Elkhart with military rites conducted by American Legion Point Rock Post #3162. Friends may call Sunday, September 7, 2014 from 2:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Elkhart, Kansas. Memorial contributions may be given to the Knights of Columbus or Elkhart Senior Center in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 854, Elkhart, KS 67950.
