Ronald L. Werner, a long-time resident of Garden City, died peacefully at the Emporia Presbyterian Manor on March 18, 2015. He was 89, born October 26, 1925, in Nekoma, Kansas to Robert Edward Werner, a native of Switzerland, and Mary Edna Fisher Werner. Ronald was preceded in death by his wife of many years, Derlyce. He is survived by his first wife, Opal Tinkum Smith of Emporia, his two children, Robert G. (Siew) Werner of Oakland, California, and Janet K. (Skip) Evans of Emporia; his 4 siblings, Dr. Willard (Wilda) Werner of Atwood, Wesley (Joanne) Werner of Garden City, Ray (Coleen) Werner of Escondido, California, Evelyn (Duane) Riley of Garden City; his 7 grandchildren: Jenny (Phil) Gibbs, Monica (Richard) Duncan, Nick (Milo) Werner, Kitty (Jesse) Liggett, David (Tricia) Evans, Kalin Werner, and Alex Werner; his 7 great-grandchildren; Mandy Gibbs, Fletcher Werner, Madison Evans, Kaylee Duncan, Laurel Werner, Ethan Evans and Dillon Evans. He is also survived by many loved nieces and nephews.
Ronald grew up in the Ingalls, Kansas area and graduated from Ingalls High School in 1943. He then served in the United States Navy during WWII. Ronald was a retired farmer, investor and previously a building contractor who built several houses in Garden City.
Funeral service will be at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, April 4 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City with military graveside rites conducted by the Garden City area Veterans Honor Guard. There will be no calling hours. The family requests memorials given to the Ingalls Alumni Foundation or Hand in Hand Hospice both in care of Garnand Funeral Home.
