Obituary for Leila Ruth Hagler

Leila Ruth Hagler, 91, longtime area resident, passed away Thursday, April 23, 2015 at High Plains Assisted Living Apartments in Lakin, Kansas.
Leila was born January 10, 1924 in Deerfield, Kansas to Charles “Doc” and Blanche Humphrey. She attended Deerfield Public Schools and, on September 9, 1940, she married her high school sweetheart, Kenneth Hagler, in Scott City, Kansas. Leila was a devoted homemaker and lived for the holidays when the entire family was usually present and the more, the merrier. Leila was also a tireless community worker. During WWII, she worked as a telegraph operator for the Santa Fe Railway and had the mind numbing task of receiving many of those dreaded War Department telegrams notifying families of the loss a fallen soldier, including her own brother-in-law. After the war, Leila concentrated on raising her 3 children in addition to being an active member of the United Presbyterian Church and numerous civic organizations, such as the Royal Neighbors Lodge, Finney County Arthritis Committee and the Kansas Kidney Foundation. She was also instrumental in helping establish the original Senior Citizens bus service in Garden City. Leila was a longtime member of Business Professional Women, holding offices at the local, district and state levels and she was a member of Epsilon Sigma Phi sorority where, again, she held office at the local and state levels.
In 1992, Leila and Ken retired to Bella Vista, Arkansas, where she was active in several local bridge clubs. She loved playing cards and other games and had an uncanny knack for winning – especially if she was keeping score. Strictly a coincidence. Following Ken’s death in 2009, Leila relocated to Lakin, following an illness, and remained there until her passing. She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, Judy Moore in 2013, her parents, 1 brother and 3 sisters. Survivors include sons and daughters-in-law, Gordon and Patty Hagler, Alpharetta, GA and Bradley and Sheril Hagler, Gladstone, MO, son-in-law, Billy Moore, Lakin, KS, 6 grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Per her wishes, no services are scheduled and she will be reunited with Ken in the Fayetteville National Cemetery, Fayetteville, Ark.
