Obituary for Betty Jane Yates

Dateline: Dighton

Betty Jane Yates, age 91, died Wednesday, June 24, 2015 at Manor of the Plains in Dodge City. She was born June 22, 1924 to Rollie Ephraim & Georgia Katherine (Burrell) Foster in Lane County, Kansas. Betty attended rural grade school and graduated from Utica High School. On September 20, 1944 she married Hobert Yates, Jr., in Dighton. They moved to Wichita, living there for a short time, before moving back to the Shields area to farm. Betty worked at the Shields Post Office for over 30 years, retiring as the Postmistress. She loved needlework of any kind and the family has many quilts and embroidered goods to treasure.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, her husband who died September 10, 2012, 1 daughter, Janie Sue Randles, 5 brothers, Bill, J.R., Herb, Jim and Jack Foster and 1 sister, Helen Leighton. Survivors include 2 sons, Ronald Yates & Marilyn of Dodge City, David Yates of Healy, 1 Daughter, Kathy & husband, David Blackwell, 3 Sisters, Mary Ruth & husband, B.J. Burrell of Evart, MI, Patty Wagner of Deland, FL and Linda Conkright of Wylie, TX, 1 son-in-law, Gary Randles of Kimball, NE, 8 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and many nieces & nephews.

Funeral Service will be held at 1:30 p.m., Monday, June 29, 2015 at the First Christian Church in Dighton with Rev. Aerii Smith presiding. Burial will follow at the Utica Cemetery in Utica, KS. Calling hours are 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday and noon to 8:00 p.m. Sunday at Boomhower Funeral Home in Dighton. Memorial contributions to the First Christian Church of Dighton or the First Christian Church of Utica in care of the funeral home.
