Obituary for Lorene Opal Stormont

Lorene Opal Stormont, 97, peacefully passed away on Thursday, June 25, 2015, in Chandler, Arizona. Lorene was born on September 15, 1917, in Lane County, Kansas, the first child of Lena and Delmar Durr. She grew up on the Durr family farm and in 1935 graduated Valedictorian from Lane County Community High School.

After graduating from Kansas State Teachers College, she taught school in Buffalo, Kansas. Lorene became a Navy wife when marrying Elmer "Bunch" Stormont, on November 1, 1940. They lived in Pensacola, Florida and San Pedro, California before Bunch was discharged in 1946. After moving back to Dighton, Lorene was a home maker and Bunch farmed. She was a member of the Dighton Methodist Church. In the early 1950s, Lorene was elected to the Dighton School Board and served until 1956, when the family moved to Tempe, Arizona. Lorene was a music teacher in the Scottsdale school system for a short period of time and later gave private piano lessons. She was a member of Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority and Tempe Women's Club. She volunteered for many years for the Phoenix Indian School. At Arizona State University, she took courses in Fashion Design. She also studied Psychology, a field that fascinated her. For 45 years, Lorene and Bunch lived 8 months each year in Arizona and 4 months in Kansas, a routine that agreed with them.

Lorene adored her grandchildren and she spent many vacations with them in Arizona, Kansas, and Colorado. Her family remembers her for planning great picnics, for long hours of Dominoes and Yahtzee, and for her potato soup, home made pies, and brownies. Lorene enjoyed having company, and always appreciated visits from friends and relatives. For many years she took good care of her dog, MacKenzie, and they went on long walks together. During her marriage, she and Bunch loved to travel and explore, especially in Mexico, Canada, and New Zealand. Two years ago, Lorene celebrated her 95th birthday with family reunions in Kansas and Colorado. Lorene's life centered around her strong faith and spirituality, her love of nature, and being a friend to the less fortunate.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bunch; parents, Lena and Delmar; brother, Marvin; and sisters, Geneva Hineman, Jeannette Shull, and Ila June Muchow.

Lorene is survived by three sisters, Ellen May Stanley, Mary Alice Bosley, and Lee Speer; daughter Dena Lasater, of Kansas City, Missouri; son Duane Stormont, of Phoenix, Arizona; son and daughter-in-law, Marc and Becky Stormont of Carmichael, California; granddaughters, Meg Holden and husband Zach of Leawood, Kansas; Lauri Sanders and husband Justin of Folsom, California; Brenda Seliskar and husband Jason of Rancho Cucamonga, California; grandson Douglas of Scottsdale, Arizona; and great grandchildren Brittney and Ashley Sanders, Ella and Grant Holden, and Brennan and Rachelle Seliskar.

Public visitation with family present will be from 4:00- 6:00 pm Sunday at Boomhower Funeral Home. A Graveside Service to Celebrate Lorene's life will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, July 6, 2015 at the Dighton Memorial Cemetery with Reverend Berniece Ludlum officiating. Lorene's family suggests Memorials to the United Methodist Church in Dighton or Lane County Historical Society, in care of Boomhower Funeral Home, Box 891, Dighton, Kansas 67839.
