Obituary for Melvin Ray Garey

Melvin Ray Garey, age 87, of Johnson, Kansas died Monday, August 10, 2015 at Stanton County Hospital in Johnson, Kansas. He was born February 23, 1928 in Stafford, Kansas, the son of Frank W. and Minnie Ruth (Little) Garey.

Melvin went to Centerview School thru the 8th grade. He then moved to Johnson and graduated from Stanton County High School. Melvin married Melba Fern Collins on March 21, 1950 in Garden City, Kansas. Melvin and Melba lived and farmed for 50 years in the Big Bow area. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Johnson, Stanton County Farm Bureau, Southwest Kansas Irrigation Association and Southwest Kansas Royalty Owners Association.

He is survived by one son; Alan Garey and wife Sharon of Johnson, Kansas, two daughters; Linda Nicholas and husband Joel of Johnson, Kansas, and Rita Garey of Garden City, Kansas, one sister; Helen Withall of Boca Raton, Florida, three grandchildren; Dustin Garey, Denise Garrett and husband Mark, Christopher Nicholas and wife Melissa, and four great-grandchildren; Madyson Garrett, M.J. Garrett, Caleb Nicholas, and Emily Nicholas.

Melvin is preceded in death by his parents; wife Melba in 2012; three brothers, and one sister.

Funeral service will be held at 10:00 AM on Thursday, August 13, 2015 at the First United Methodist Church in Johnson, Kansas with Reverend Richard Fitzgerald officiating. Interment will follow at the Stanton County Cemetery in Johnson, Kansas with military rites by Johnson VFW Post #3684. Friends may call from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM on Wednesday, August 12, 2015 at Garnand Funeral Home in Johnson. Memorial contributions may be given to the Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo, Stanton County Memorial Living Center, Stanton County Long Term Care Unit or the First United Methodist Church of Johnson in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 715, Johnson, Kansas 67855.
