Obituary for Dean Underhill

Dean Underhill, age 89, of Ulysses, KS died Saturday, April 23, 2016 at his home in Ulysses, KS. He was born October 2, 1926 at Kansas City, MO the son of Elvin John and Frances Josephine (Slover) Underhill.

Dean attended grade school in Emporia, KS and Wells, KS. He graduated from Abilene High School in 1944. He attended Washington University, St. Louis, MO and South Dakota State Teaching College, Booking, SD while serving in the United States Air Force. Dean worked for A.L. Duckwall Stores for 39 years; He began his employment in 1946 as a fountain manager. He managed Duckwall Stores in Garden City, KS, Kinsley, KS and Ulysses, KS. Dean was a member of St. John’s Episcopal Church, Ulysses, KS, Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79 and the Masonic Lodge #435, Ulysses, KS.

On May 27, 1978 Dean married Deloris Marie Brown in Ulysses, KS. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons; J.D. Underhill and wife Ellen of Ulysses, KS and Chris Nuckles of Dripping Springs, TX, four daughters; Julie Meier of Ulysses, KS, Deanna Turner and Husband John, Jr of Clay Center, KS, Debbie Cole and Husband Zack of Satanta, KS and Cindy Ellis of Dripping Springs, TX, 14 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, one great grandchild on the way, one great-great grandson, two great-great grandchildren on the way and his beloved dog Bentley.

Dean is preceded in death by his parents, wife; Leona (Lee) Underhill and two son-in-laws; Larry Meier and Tom Reist.

Funeral service will be held Friday, April 29, 2016 at 10:00 a.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, Ulysses, KS with Father Dale Lumley officiating. Burial will follow at Ulysses Cemetery, Ulysses, KS, with Masonic rites by Masonic Lodge #435 and military rites by Dexter D. Harbour American Legion Post #79. Friends may call on Thursday from 10:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. with family present from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses, KS. Family requests memorials be given to St. John’s Episcopal Church, Ulysses, KS or St. Catherine Hospice in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant, Ulysses, KS 67880.
