Carl graduated from Alexander High School in 1944. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during World War II. After his discharge he completed his Bachelors Degree at York College in York, Nebraska. He later earned his Master Degree in Education from the University of Nebraska. He began teaching in 1952 and became the Principal of Dighton High School in 1965 and served until 1976. He also farmed in Rush County and was a representative for Union Central Insurance Company. For the past 3 years he has lived in Leavenworth and Lawrence.
