Obituary for Louis (Sonny) Kyle Ipson

Louis (Sonny) Kyle Ipson died February 2, 2017 at Villa Marie Assisted Living Facility in Mulvane, Kansas at the age of 93. He was born to Earl R. and Beva (Bartley) Ipson on April 16, 1923 in Elkhart, Kansas.

After graduation from Rolla High School, he served in WWII as a tail gunner with the 8th Air Force B-24 bombing squadron based in Bedford, England – he is the last of his flight crew to pass. Upon returning to Kansas, he worked for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company in Hugoton and Elkhart, then worked in the U.S. Post Office in Liberal, Kansas, finally returning to Rolla, Kansas as the postmaster. After retirement, he and Peggy moved to Wichita.

Louis is survived by his children, Donald Ipson of Baton Rouge, Louisiana and Margo Ipson Latiolais of Lafayette, Lousiana; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; brother, Howard Ipson of El Paso, Texas; and sister, Eileen Firmin of Mesquite, Texas.
Also surviving are his four step-children, Mark Comes and wife Julie, Debbie Comes all of Derby, Kansas, Jennifer Comes of Wichita, Kansas, Linda Hodges of Boise, Idaho; eight step-grandchildren and five step-great-grandchildren, and a host of Ipson/Hull/Clinesmith/Bartley nephews, nieces and cousins and his pet, Missy.

He was preceded in death by his oldest son Richard; wives, Dorothy, Margaret, and Peggy; brother, Roger Ipson; sister, Earlene Ipson Williams; parents, Earl and Beva; two nephews, Philip Firmin and Ted Ipson; and one step-son, Steven Comes.

Louis donated his remains to the University of Kansas Medical School for research. Inurnment will be scheduled later at the Rolla Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the WWII Veterans Honor Flight, Rolla Lions Club, or the Humane Society in care of Garnand Funeral Home, PO Box 8540 Elkhart, KS 67950.
