Obituary for John Frank Strauss

John Frank Strauss, 96, died Sunday, March 19, 2017 at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City. He was born October 15, 1920 in Inola, Oklahoma the son of John L. & Marie (Schroeder) Strauss.
John moved with his family to Nebraska when he was a child. They later moved to Buhler, Kansas where John graduated from High School. He then attended and graduated from Salt Lake Business College in Hutchinson. John served in the United States Army during WWII from June 1942 to June 1945. John served in the 95th Infantry Division and the 97th Infantry Division. On July 17, 1943, he married Virginia Kornelson in Buhler, Kansas. They moved to Garden City in 1954 from Hutchinson and have lived in Garden City since. John worked as a salesman for Jewel T; later owned and operated “Quality Market” Grocery Store; managed the Goodwill Nursing Home; worked as a disc jockey at KNCO radio; but for the majority of his working career he worked as a reporter and assistant manager for KUPK TV. He retired from KUPK in 1985. After his retirement, John continued to work as a mini van driver for the Finney County Senior Center; worked at his church in maintenance and facilities; and probed wheat for the Kansas Grain Inspection Services.
He was a member of First Assembly of God Church in Garden City; served as a Royal Ranger Outpost Commander #9 for many years; served on the YMCA Board; Boy Scouts Council; Mexican American Ministries; REACH Council; PTO President; 2 terms as a Silver Head Legislator; Board of Directors for the Senior Center Transportation; and SAMS. John loved helping at his church with various activities and committees remodeling homes, reading, and photography.
Survivors include a son Larry (Karen) Strauss of Myrtle Beach, SC; 2 daughters Jackie (Charles) Davis of Garden City and Patti Strauss of Garden City; 4 grandchildren; and 7 great grandchildren. John is preceded in death by his wife Virginia who died on September 2, 1983. He is also preceded in death by his parents; a daughter Brenda Wagley; a brother Arnold; 4 sister Edna, Leona, Malinda, and Marie; and a great-granddaughter Christiane.
Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, March 24, 2017 at First Assembly of God with Pastor Nathan Sheridan officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard and the American Legion District #8 Honor Guard. Friends may call from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family request memorials given to the First Assembly of God Building Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
