Obituary for Margaret C "Peggy" Phipps

Margaret C. “Peggy” Phipps, 94, died Tuesday, March 28, 2017 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. She was born August 31, 1922 at Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania the daughter of John T. & Laura M. (Wagener) Caldwell.
Peggy grew up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania where she attended school. She graduated from Taylor Alderdice High School and then attended 2 years at the University of Pittsburgh. Peggy then served her country during WWII in the Women’s Army Corp from October 1943 to December 1945. She was first stationed at Fort Francis E. Warren in Wyoming and later at Camp Carson in Colorado. On September 21, 1945, she married William Lyle Phipps in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Peggy has been a resident of Garden City since. A homemaker, she was a member of the American Legion Post #9 of Garden City. She enjoyed cooking, baking, especially cookies at Christmas time, bowling, swimming and she became a certified lifeguard at the age of 66 at the Garden City Family Y.
Survivors include 3 children Thomas Phipps of Florida, Nancy Leiker of The Villages, Florida, and Jimmy and wife Vickye Phipps of Garden City; 10 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren. Peggy is preceded in death by her husband Williams Lyle Phipps who died on October 18, 1993. She is also preceded in death by her parents; an infant daughter Barbara Phipps; and a son John W. Phipps.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Friday, March 31, 2017 at the Chapel at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City with Bob Bates officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City with military graveside rites conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard. There will be no calling hours. The family request memorials given to St. Catherine Hospice in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
