Preceded in death by her parents- 2 brothers-Jose Manuel Castro & Pedro Castro and 2 sisters – Alejandra C. Diaz & Dolores Celis.

Maria Elena was born in Cd. Juarez Mexico and moved to El Paso at a young age. She attended schools there before marrying Jesus. They moved to Garden City in 1975 permanently. She worked at United Methodist Mexican American Ministries for twenty years as Assistant Coordinator and translator for the Early Detection Works Breast Health Program. She founded and led the Hispanic Woman Against Cancer Coalition, a group that provided education and support for woman and families who were dealing with cancer. She participated yearly in the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure and recruited family, friends, and neighbors in this cause that was so dear
to her heart. She was an avid antique collector (treasure hunter), loved crafts, sewing, and ceramics. Her family, many friends and colleagues have been left with treasured memories and special personal gifts she crafted with love.
