Obituary for Lawrence Dean Pointer

Lawrence “Dean” Pointer, age 82, of Ulysses, Kansas, went to be with his Lord on Thursday, May 25, 2017. He was born October 29, 1934, in Hoisington, Kansas, the son of Floyd E. and Cleo (Tope) Pointer.

Dean attended Kendall grade school and high school; graduating from Kendall High School. He married Neva Smith on March 18, 1955. They were married 62 years. When Dean and Neva got married, Dean was working at a service station in Lakin, Kansas. Later, he was employed by Acid Engineers, Dowell, and the Helix Gas Plant located in Grant County. Dean retired after 32 years of service. Dean and Neva shared a ceramic business for 45 years. He resided in Ulysses for 54 years with his family; moving into The Legacy at Park View in 2013. Dean enjoyed singing in the kitchen in the mornings, bowling, hunting, traveling, driving trucks during wheat harvest, eating out, visiting with friends and family, and gardening. His cookie jar was always filled and ready for his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Dean was a loving father and grandfather. One didn’t visit his home without having to sit down at the table to have a meal or snack.

He is survived by his wife, Neva of their home; children, Doris Greene and husband Jerry of Ulysses, Rodney Pointer of Ulysses, Debra Case of Ozawkie, Denise Sisk and husband Len of Garden City, and Deanna Pointer of Ulysses; seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren; sister, Shirley Williams of Ulysses; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Dean is preceded in death by his parents; Floyd E. and Cleo Pointer; stepfather, Ralph Earnest; brother, Floyd, his wife Glenda, and their son Eugene; nephew, Andrew; granddaughter, Lacey Case; and brother-in-law, Jim Williams.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at 10:00 AM (Mountain Time) at the United Methodist Church in Kendall with Reverend Gina Tyler and Pastor Bob Le Vene officiating. Graveside service will be Tuesday, May 30, 2017, at 1:30 PM (Central Time) at Ulysses Cemetery. Friends may call on Monday, May 29, 2017, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM (Central Time) at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to the Rodney and Deanna Pointer Fund in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
