Obituary for William C. Daugherty II

Born on December 31, 1933, William C. Daugherty II (“Bill” or affectionately as “Gramp” to his grandchildren) was born to William S. and Virginia Walter Daugherty. Bill’s father owned and operated Daugherty’s Drug Store of Syracuse, Kansas. The family drugstore was established in 1909 by Bill’s grandfather, William C. Daugherty.
When Bill’s father moved the family to be a salesman for Eli Lily Drug Company, the family moved from Syracuse to Leavenworth, where Bill finished the second half of 1st grade. The family moved again to Hays before finally returning to Syracuse in the fall of 1942 where Bill entered 4th grade. He would graduate from Syracuse High School, class of 1951. Bill attended KU for 3 semesters where he met Pat on a blind date during the first weekend of September 1951. He proposed to Patricia Ann Hessling on the first weekend of September 1952.
In April 1953, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army and attended boot camp at Camp Roberts in California. On September 6, 1953, Pat and Bill were married in Kansas City at the Covenant Presbyterian, her church since childhood. Bill was then stationed with the occupation force at a medical unit in Munich, Germany for 2 years.
Bill and Pat’s first child, Kathi Sue Sullivan, was born in Munich in January 1955. In October 1957, William Douglass Daugherty was born at St. Luke’s Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri. Bill and the family returned to Southwest Kansas where he would begin his 50-year career as a registered pharmacist. A second daughter, Raelynn Daugherty, was born in February 1959 at Syracuse’s Donahue Memorial Hospital.
Bill was working with his father at the Daugherty Drug Store in Syracuse until May 1963 when he purchased Lakin Pharmacy. Bill and Pat have lived in Lakin since. They along with their three children moved into their house at 208 W. Waterman Street, just two blocks from the drugstore. Bill owned the store and operated the Lakin Pharmacy until retiring in 1996. He continued to work with local and regional pharmacies as a relief pharmacist until 2009.
Bill loved keeping up with his customers and their children over the years. He held a variety of leadership and community involvement positions in Kearny County, which included the Lakin City Council, First Presbyterian Church, Area Mental Health Center, Senior Center, Silver-Haired Legislature, and the Rotary Club. He was also active as treasurer for Boy Scouts of America Troop 35 (an organization in which he was involved in one capacity or another for over 50 years), and the Kearny County Council on Aging.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and his two daughters, Kathi and Raelynn. Bill is survived by his wife Pat; his son Doug and wife Sheri; a sister Sue Davis of Syracuse; 5 grandchildren, and 7 ½ great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 10, 2017 at the First Presbyterian Church in Lakin with Rev. Rita Stockton officiating. Burial will follow at the Lakin Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard and the American Legion District #8 Honor Guard. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, please direct any memorials to the Boy Scouts of America Troop 35 in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Lakin.
