Obituary for Beverly Ann Coates

Beverly Ann Coates, 66, died Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at her home in Garden City. She was born December 22, 1950 in Garden City, Kansas the daughter of Raymond “Bud” & Opal (Kingston) Wishon.
As a young child, Beverly moved with her family to Missouri for a very short time before they moved back to Finney County. She attended Holcomb schools and graduated from Holcomb High School. Beverly then attended Garden City Community College. She began working as a secretary and receptionist at the Garden City Co-op. She then worked for many years as a roaming secretary for USD #457. While at USD #457, Beverly later became a Para-Professional for the gifted students at Kenneth Henderson Middle School. She also worked as office manager and an assistant to the director of the Adult Learning Center in Garden City. Beverly was a member of the Church of the Brethren in Garden City and she enjoyed genealogy, flower gardening, oil painting, fishing and baking with her grandchildren. Her love of genealogy lead her to become the author of the Coates Family genealogy book.
On April 17, 1971, she married Dennis Coates in Garden City. He survives. Other survivors include two daughters Shelia Gondoly & husband William of Wichita, Kansas and Dena Walck & husband Brandon Barr of Deerfield, Kansas; her mother Opal Wishon of Garden City; a sister Diane Crockett & husband Max of Garden City; and 8 grandchildren Kyle Reece, Jayna Reece, Kayla Gondoly, Kason Gondoly, Trevin Walck, Macie Walck, Emelia Barr, & Lucie Barr. Beverly is preceded in death by her father; a brother Fred Wishon; and infant sister Wilma Wishon and twin grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 5, 2017 at the Church of the Brethren in Garden City with Von Hunn officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the American Cancer Society in care of the funeral home.
