Obituary for Verna Lou Long

Verna Lou Long, age 79, of Wichita, Kansas, and formerly of Ulysses, Kansas, died Monday, September 4, 2017, at Via Christi Hospital St. Francis in Wichita, Kansas. She was born July 26, 1938, in Syracuse, Kansas, the daughter of Albert Schoonover and Thelma (Batman) Potter.

Verna married Richard Long on June 23, 1956, in Syracuse, Kansas. They moved to rural Grant County and started farming in 1960. Verna and Richard enjoyed a rewarding career in farming for many years before retiring and moving to Pueblo, Colorado, in 1996. While in Pueblo, Verna and Richard both took great pleasure in competitive trap shooting. They returned to Ulysses in 2000, where they continued to enjoy friends and family. Verna and Richard then moved to Wichita in 2013.

Verna enjoyed quilting, cross-stitch, wool appliqué and spending time with her grandchildren. Verna instilled the love of quilting in many family members and friends. She was a past President and member of Stitches In Time Quilt Guild. She also sang with the Sweet Adelines in Ulysses.

She is survived by two sons, Martin Long and wife Debbie, and Michael Long and wife Janet all of Ulysses; one daughter, Jennifer Feldt and husband Rick Navarrette of Wichita; six grandchildren; and eleven great-grandchildren. Verna is also survived by her beloved canine companion, Denver, who provided faithful and loyal friendship and love during the past several years.

Verna is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard; three brothers, Don Schoonover, Charles Schoonover, Dale Schoonover; one sister, Mary Ruth Hartshorn; father, Albert Schoonover; mother, Thelma Potter; and step-father, Arthur Potter.

Funeral service will be Friday, September 8, 2017, at 10:00 AM at the First United Methodist Church in Ulysses with Reverend Todd Guinn officiating. Interment will follow at Ulysses Cemetery. Friends may call on Thursday, September 7, 2017, from 3:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to Pets for Vets or First United Methodist Church Wednesday Night Fellowship Dinner in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
