Obituary for Margaret Ellen Hubbard

Margaret Ellen (Bedker) Hubbard was born on June 23, 1940 in Garden City, KS to Frank & Vivian (Long) Bedker. She went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 11, 2017 in Fairview, OK.

Margaret grew up in Garden City until the family moved to Seattle, WA in her senior year of high school. After she graduated, she moved back to Garden City and married the love of her life, Walter Hubbard on November 23, 1958. Over the years, they had 7 children. She kept busy raising the children and helping Walter on the farm driving tractor, truck and cooking meals with her mother-in-law Gladys (whom she adored and who taught her how to sew and bake). Mom was active in Country Neighbors Extension Homemakers Unit, as well as helping her children in 4H and numerous Fair projects.

While enjoying many hobbies, she wasn’t afraid to learn new ones. She loved sewing dresses, shirts, blouses and accessories for her family & friends, but notably numerous Prom dresses and two of her daughters’ wedding dresses. She also made all of her children’s unity candles and wedding cakes. Ceramics, scrapbooking, making gingerbread houses, and wheat weaving also gave her pleasure. Additionally, Margaret loved growing flowers and provided arrangements for church for many years. She won many awards with her canning and baked goods items. She especially loved baking and eventually opened her own business – “Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard”. She also loved quilting; she made many quilts & quilt items and especially enjoyed getting together with her sister, Janet to quilt.

Spending time with her children, grandchildren and family was her passion. She enjoyed teaching them all how to bake & sew. She had a heart for children and loved being involved in all their activities, including tea parties with all her granddaughters. Mom loved music and made sure all of the children took piano & some even took voice lessons. She would have music playing most of the time in the house and would be funny and sing old songs to us as we did chores or were baking. She had a nickname for each child and most of her grandchildren -- each having to do with something we did or maybe a movie we watched together.

Most of all Mom loved the Lord with all her heart and wasn’t afraid to share that with others – she loved people “fiercely”. She was very active in church with the AWANA program and “Memorize the Word”. She extended her cooking passion every week for the youth for 20 plus years. She taught Sunday school and enjoyed the women’s group at church. She had a soft spot for other women who might be struggling in life and always made an effort to visit with them and encourage them. Mom’s gift was sending cards to everyone at church and in her family – for all special occasions or for no occasion at all, just to encourage. She did this even when her eye sight was failing. She was always willing to open her home up to all for any occasion.

Margaret was preceded in death by her husband Walter, her parents and an infant sister Doris Marie. She is survived by her children: Tamara Eitzen, and husband Phil of Fairview, OK; Todd Hubbard, and wife Margie of Kalvesta, KS; Tonja Isaac, and husband Les, of Garden City, KS; Troy Hubbard, and wife Darla of Fairview, OK, Treena Reynolds, and husband Rob of Marlton, NJ; Walter Hubbard II, partner Chris Lee, Prairie Village, KS; Matthew Hubbard and wife Heather of Garden City, KS. 16 grandchildren (and one on the way) and 4 great-grandchildren (with two on the way). Siblings: Bill Bedker & wife Sarah of Cortez, CO; Janet Malmstrom & husband Larry of Wickenburg, AZ; Don Bedker & wife Carol of Seattle, WA; and Bob Bedker & wife Cheryl of Tokeland, WA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
