Obituary for Ernest Dean "Ernie" Kuehn

Dighton- Ernest Dean Kuehn, 87, died on Saturday, September 23, 2017 at Park Lane Nursing Home in Scott City. He was born on April 20, 1930 at Scott City the son of Fritz Helmut & Katie (Bahm) Kuehn. He graduated from Dighton High School in 1948. From 1955 to 1962 he served in the U.S.Army during the Viet Nam War. After his discharge he returned to Lane County where he was a lifelong farmer and stockman.

Ernie was active in his church and community. He was a member of the United Methodist Church where he served on the Pastor-Parish Relation Committee, was the Head Usher, member of the choir, lay speaker & Charter Member of the Methodist Men. He was a Supervisor of the Lane County Conservation District for 35 years and Chairman of the District for 22 years. Served on the Forestry & Wildlife Resolution & Great Plains Committee of the Kansas Association Of Conservation Districts and was a Past Chairman. President of Lane County Farm Bureau, Alamota Township Clerk, 4-H Community & Project Leader, Member of Dairy Crème Team Exploratory Committee, Member of Lane County Health Care Committee. I.O.O. F. Ledge, Lane County Fair Board and American Legion Post # 190.

Ernie had a passion for Oil Witching and did this for over 37 years. He founded the Dirks Oil Field in Logan County and had help pick oil sites in Illinois, Tennessee, Kansas, Colorado, Nebraska, Kentucky & Indiana.

He is survived by 2 Nieces Janice & Dale Hemel of Dighton, Anita & Jim Kerbaugh of Hill City, Nephew Lyle Shapland & Don Gale of Kansas City, Cousin Dannie Bahm of Scott City, Great Niece Audrey & Ashley Placke of Andover,Great Nephew Shanon & Jessie Schwartz of Andover & Great-Great Nephew Alexander Placke of Andover. He was preceded in death by his Parents & 2 Sisters- Juanita Mae Kuehn & Irene E. Shapland.

Funeral Service will be held at 2:00 PM on Tuesday at the United Methodist Church in Dighton. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery with Military Rites by American Legion Post # 190 and Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard. Friends may call from 9:00 AM to 11:00 AM Tuesday at Boomhower Funeral Home in Dighton. Memorials are suggested to Wounded Warrior Project or Feeding America in care of Boomhower Funeral Home.
