Obituary for John F. Walters II

John F. Walters II, 88, died Sunday, September 24, 2017 at his home in Garden City. He was born July 21, 1929 in Garden City the son of Raimon Gerhart & Irene Wilamena (Finnup) Walters.
John has lived most of his life in Garden City. He attended the Kemper Military School in Boonville, Missouri. He then attended Kansas State University where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture. While at Kansas State University, Johns played both football and basketball. He then served in the United States Army during the Korean War. He served from 1952 to 1980. John then served in the Army Reserves until 1989 when he retired from the military as Lt. Col. John then worked as owner and operator of Walters Motor Co. He later worked for many years as a crop insurance agent with Farm Credit of Southwest Kansas. John was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church; the Knights of Columbus; VFW where he served as Past Commander; the American Legion where he also served as Past Commander; and the Elks Lodge. John enjoyed family social events, sports, and animals especially his dogs Casey, Sally, & Zoey.
In 1950, John married Patricia McQuirk in Garden City. He later married Patrticia Vaughn Hoezee in 1987 in Garden City. She survives. Other survivors include 6 children James (Karen) Walters of Hagerman, Idaho, Rebecca (Joe) Roquemore of Ponca City, Oklahoma, Tami (Patrick) Wells of Garden City, KS, Kathy (Tom) Winter of Garden City, KS, Linda (Gene) Greer of Garden City, KS, and Michael Hoezee of Garden City, KS; a brother Raimon G. “Bud” Walters of Garden City, KS; 13 Grandchildren; 21 Great-Grandchildren; and 3 Great Great-Grandchildren. John is preceded in death by his parents; a son John F. Walters III; a brother Edward F. Walters; and a sister Anne Walters Gerber.
An evening service will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 28, 2017 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Von Hunn officiating. Funeral Mass will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, September 29, 2017 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City with Rev. Warren Stecklein as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 2:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo in care of the funeral home.
