George S. Pappas
George S. Pappas, 82, died Friday, October 6, 2017 at his home in Garden City. George was born on May 12, 1935 in Garden City. He is the son of Sam and Chrysanthe (Macreathu) Pappas.
George has been a lifetime resident of Garden City and graduated from Garden City High School in 1952. George met his wife, Melva June Cook, while attending Garden City High School. George and Melva married on January 22, 1955 in Garden City, and were married for 54 years. George served in the National Guard from 1952-1965. George attended Garden City Junior College and worked various jobs. He then founded Pappas Concrete in the early 1960s and retired in March 1992.
George was a charter member of Bible Christian Church in Garden City, where he was an elder and sunday school teacher for several years. He also served his community as a school board member of USD #457 in the mid 1980’s and coached girls slow pitch softball for 6 years. George was an avid fisherman and was a member of the High Plains Bassmasters. George had several hobbies including: golfing, playing baseball and basketball, water skiing, playing pool, cards, dominos, playing his guitar, singing, 4-wheeling, and watching the Kansas City Chiefs. Above all, George loved the Lord and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
George is preceded in death by his parents; his wife Melva Pappas; a sister Eve Bates; and a brother Chris Manasis. Survivors include three children: Sam & wife Tracy Pappas of Oklahoma City, Ok., Susan & husband Darin Newell of Garden City, and Angie Pappas of Garden City; 2 sisters Mary Ann Kosan of Benbrook, Tx., and Maggie Dodd of Broken Arrow, Ok.; 8 Grandchildren: Bryce Pappas, Shalyn Hooten, Tyler Newell, Colton Newell, Sara Newell, Breanda Newell, Haeli Newell, and Sharae Green; and 2 Great-Grandchildren Lykaios Newell and Kayson Newell.
Funeral service will be held at 10:00am on Wednesday, October 11, 2017 at Bible Christian Church in Garden City with Bob Bates officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by the Kansas Army National Honor Guard. Visitation for friends and family is available from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Monday and Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research in care of the funeral home.
