George E. Martinez, 88, died Sunday, October 8, 2017 at Penrose St. Francis Hospital in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He was born September 8, 1929 in McMahon, Texas the son of Eugenio & Ramona (Eureste) Martinez.
George moved with his family to Stamford, Texas when he was a young boy. He grew up in Stamford where he attended school. On September 26, 1951, he married Lupe Ruiz in Haskell, Texas. They moved to Garden City in 1968 and have lived in Garden City since. While living in Texas, George worked for the Railroad and later at a cotton gin. After moving to Garden City, he worked for Bud Meredith Construction and later worked and retired from Monfort. After retirement, George continued to work in carpentry and laying carpet. He was a member of St. Dominic Catholic Church of Garden City; served on the St. Dominic School Board; a member of the Knights of Columbus; the G.I. Forum; and the Cursillo Movement. George enjoyed woodworking, tinkering, fishing, visiting with friends, and spending time with his family.
Survivors include his wife Lupe Martinez of the home; 5 children Andrew R. Martinez, Sr. & wife Mary of Garden City, Ks., Jay R. Martinez, Sr. & wife Emma of Andrews, Tx., Dianna Martinez-Terrazas of Garden City, Ks., Edward R. Martinez & partner Marty Pavlik of Portland, Or., and Jay R. Martinez, Jr. of Rupert, Idaho; 8 Grandchildren; 22 Great Grandchildren; 8 Great Great-Grandchildren; and 5 Nieces and Nephews. George is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Fransisca Cabrera.
Vigil Service and Rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 12, 2017 at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, October 13, 2017 also at St. Dominic Catholic Church in Garden City with Rev. Warren Stecklein as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. Friends may call from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family requests memorials given to St. Dominic Catholic Church in care of the funeral home.
