Obituary for Neil McWhirter

Dighton- Neil McWhirter, 73, died on Wednesday, November 1, 2017 at his home in Lane County. He was born on May 1, 1944 in Lane County the son of Elgin Clifford & Iva Lucille (Mumma) McWhirter. He married Patricia Castle on March 27, 1964 at Dighton. He later married Donna Jo Miller on December 4, 1976 at Dighton. She died on November 19, 1986. He married Sara Reif on July 30, 2005 at Dighton.

Neil graduated from Dighton High School in 1962. He was a life long Farmer-Stockman in Lane County and also raised exotic animals. He enjoyed rodeos and riding horses and in 1988 was the Kansas State Team Penning Average Winner and also the Men’s High Point Winner. He also competed in Demolition Derbies, helped with circle track racing, owned a rear engine dragster and competed in street legal drag racing. He was a member of the United Methodist Church of Dighton.

He is survived by his Wife- Sara McWhirter of the Home, 3 Daughters- Marlece O’Brien and Regina McWhirter of Dighton and Teara McWhirter of Kingman, Arizona, Step-Son- Heath Albert of Lawrence, 2 Granddaughters Madison O’Brien and Kenadee O’Brien, and his Oklahoma children- Lena Vandiver and Jessica & Loc Nguyen and their daughters- Jennie & Olivia Nguyen all of Yukon, Oklahoma.

Private Graveside Service was held at the Dighton Memorial Cemetery with Berniece Ludlum officiating. Memorials are suggested to the United Methodist Church or Pheasants Forever in care of Boomhower Funeral Home. Condolences may be posted at www.garnandfuneralhomes.com
