Obituary for Michael R. Gilbert

Michael R. Gilbert, 71, died Monday, November 6, 2017 near Walsenburg, Colorado. He was born November 25, 1945 in Oberlin, Kansas the son of Harlan L. & Genevieve R. (Lemman) Gilbert.
Michael graduated from Stockton High School in 1965. He later attended 1 year at Fort Hays State University and 1 year at Garden City Community College. After graduating from high school, Michael moved to Dighton. He later moved to Garden City in 1971 and has lived in Garden City since. Michael served in the Army National Guard for 22 years. He also worked for the Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks for more than 20 years. After his retirement, he worked as a truck driver for 10 years for various Garden City trucking companies. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church of Garden City, a Senior member of the Pope & Young Club, the Safari Club of Kansas City, the NRA, and the Sand & Sage Rifle & Pistol Club. He enjoyed hunting with a bow, rifle, and shotgun, and was an outfitter for big game.
On June 17, 1972, he married Loretta Marie Matza in Garden City, Kansas. She survives. Other survivors include 2 daughters Tina & husband Steve Wherrell of Wichita, Ks and Lisa & husband Steve Perkins of Goddard, Ks; a brother Robert & wife Edda Gilbert of Brookville, Florida; and 4 Grandchildren Bridget Wherrell, Aidan Wherrell, Aubrey Wherrell, & Grant Perkins. Michael is preceded in death by his parents and a sister Betty L. Gilbert.
A rosary will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, November 12, 2017 at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, November 13, 2017 at St. Mary Catholic Church in Garden City with Fr. Charles Seiwert as Celebrant. Burial will follow at Sunset Memorial Gardens in Garden City with military rites conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard and the American Legion District #8 Honor Guards. Friends may call from Noon to 8:00 p.m. on Saturday and from Noon to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the American Heart Association in care of the funeral home.
