Obituary for Robert W. "Bob" Wittlake Sr.

Robert W. “Bob” Wittlake, Sr., 92, died Saturday, December 9, 2017 at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses, Kansas. He was born September 25, 1925 in Cambridge, Nebraska the son of Levi Oliver & Lizzie (Thir) Wittlake.
Bob grew up on a farm in NW Decatur County, Kansas and was reared by his mother and uncle, George Thir. He attended a country elementary school and Herndon High School in Herndon, Kansas. Bob Served in the United States Army from January 1945 to July 1946. He was stationed at Aberdeen Proving Grounds, Maryland where he trained mechanics. While in Maryland he met Betty Naomi Gosnell of Baltimore, MD and they married in Phenix, Alabama on March 30, 1946. Bob worked for many years for Kansas-Nebraska Gas Co. in Atwood, Lakin, and Ingalls, Kansas. After retirement from K-N, Bob and Betty were proprietors of B&B Tavern in Ingalls. Bob will be remembered for always lending a helping hand and his ability to fix most things. He was on the volunteer fire departments in Atwood and Lakin. While living in Ingalls he helped 4-H children with woodworking projects, and served as President of the Santa Fe Trail Museum board. Bob spent much of his time in his workshop building wooden items including rocking horses for his great grandchildren. He also loved being outside hunting and fishing.
Survivors include daughters Sharon (Dennis) Gilbert of Marion, IL and Donna (Martin) Neff of Lakin, KS; daughter-in-law Blythe Fletcher Wittlake of Colorado Springs, CO; a son Samuel (Retha) Wittlake of Assaria, KS; 8 grandchildren; and 11 great grandchildren. Bob is preceded in death by his wife Betty who died on July 24, 2004. He is also preceded in death by his parents; a son Robert W. Wittlake, Jr.; two infant sisters; and an uncle George Thir.
A graveside service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 16, 2017 at the Lakin Cemetery in Lakin, KS with Rev. Terry Woodbury officiating. Military rites will be conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday at Garnand Funeral Home in Lakin. The family suggests memorials given to the American Legion Post #46 in care of the funeral home.
