Obituary for Opal Maxine Covey

Opal Maxine (Stimatze) Covey, age 93, of Ulysses, Kansas, entered into Eternal Rest on Thursday, December 28, 2017, at Bob Wilson Memorial Hospital in Ulysses. She was born May 16, 1924, in rural St. John, Kansas, the daughter of Clyde Walter and Jennie Mae (DeGarmo) Stimatze.

Opal was a Ulysses resident since 1949 moving from Stafford County, she was a homemaker. As a girl, Opal attended a country two-room school. She graduated from Macksville High School in 1942. On June 28, 1942, she married Ivan (Bill) Covey at the Methodist Church in Macksville. Opal belonged to the Shelton Memorial Christian Church in Ulysses and the Kansas Farm Bureau.

Opal is survived by her sons, Gary Vernon Covey and wife, Donna, of Ulysses, and Jimmy Ray Covey and wife, Vicki, of Colorado Springs, Colorado; sister, Lois Spencer of Ulysses; four grandchildren, Dustin Covey, Crystal Klein and husband Wes, Mark Covey and wife Caitlin, Shawn Sawatzky and husband Tandon; seven great-grandchildren, Miah, Isabel, and Kiera Covey, and Kellen, Anna, Allie, and Adelyn Sawatzky.

Opal is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bill; four brothers, Carrol, Truman, Leo, and Orban Stimatze; and one sister, Ruby Brickey.

Funeral service will be Tuesday, January 2, 2018, at 2:00 PM at the Shelton Memorial Christian Church in Ulysses with Reverend Dr. Jimmy Covey and Reverend Kelly Gindlesberger officiating. Interment will follow at Ulysses Cemetery. Visitation will be Monday, January 1, 2018, from 2:00 PM until 8:00 PM with family present from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Ulysses. Memorial contributions may be given to the Shelton Memorial Christian Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
