Obituary for Raymond G. Smith

Raymond G. Smith, 73, died Thursday, January 11, 2018 at his home in Garden City. He was born January 27, 1944 in Worthington, Minnesota the son of Earl G. & Alice L. (Sundet) Smith.
Raymond grew up in Worthington, Minnesota where he attended school. He served in the United States Navy on the USS Sheldon from 1961 to 1967. After the service he returned to Worthington where he began working at the Worthington Municipal Power Plant. He moved to Garden City in 1981 where he has lived since. While in Garden City, he worked for many years for Sunflower Electric as head shift supervisor. Raymond was a member of the VFW and the American Legion both of Garden City, and in 2015 was inducted into the Jackson Speedway Racing Hall of Fame. He had a love for car racing, shining his race cars, woodworking, and he especially loved to be involved with his children’s and grandchildren’s activities.
On January 15, 1966, he married Judy Gronewold in Worthington, Minnesota. She survives. Other survivors include 4 children Sandy Foley & husband Bill Harmon of Garden City, Julia Oard of Lakin, Kansas, Launa Smith of Garden City, Kansas, and Eric Earl Smith & wife Daisy of Garden City, Kansas; a brother Bill Smith & wife Pat of Worthington, Minnesota; a sister Mary Anderson & husband Tom of Castle Rock, Colorado; 9 Grandchildren Brodrick Smith, Meranda Foley, Taylor Foley, Desmond Smith, Angelo Acosta, Jose Acosta, Kaira Acosta, Jersey Rae Smith, and Alexa Smith; and 3 Great-Grandchildren. Raymond is preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 15, 2018 at Garnand Funeral Home with Raul Silva officiating. A private family interment will take place at a later date. There will be no calling hours. The family request memorials given to the Finney County Humane Society in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
