Obituary for John S. Ryder

Garden City- John S. Ryder, 87, died on Monday, January 15, 2018 at St Catherine Hospital in Garden City. He was born on August 13, 1930 at Brooklyn, New York the son of John Samuel & Flora Ruth (Gosline) Ryder. He married Lottie Paralee Wright on May 4, 1965 at Manhattan. She died on November 13, 2015.

John attended PS # 63 in Brooklyn and Smithtown, New York High School. He served in the United States Navy for 11 years. He was a fire control technician who did the settings on the long range guns during the Korean Conflict. He later served in the United States Army National Guard for 9 years giving him 20 years as a military person. In 1964 he moved to Manhattan and worked at a lumberyard and sears before beginning a career at Kansas State University as a media specialist for 16 years. After his retirement he moved to Bullhead City, Arizona in 1995 and to Garden City in 1999.

John was a member of Fellowship Baptist Church in Garden City, American Legion, VFW, was a hospice volunteer and the Treasurer of Builders Of Hope Mentor Program.

He is survived by Daughter- Charlotte & John Osbourn of Buena Vista, Colorado, Sons- Dean Caraway of Garden City & Gene Caraway of Marana, Arizona, 4 Sisters- Carole Ryan and Sandra Alicer of Bay Shore, New York, Delores Pitocco of Patch Over, New York & Barbara Bucciero of Stanton Island, New York, 5 Grandchildren, 16 Great-Grandchildren & 13 Great-Great-Grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his Parents, Wife, Brother- Walter Ryder & 1 Grandson.

Funeral Service will be at 10:30 AM Friday at Fellowship Baptist Church in Garden City with Rev Robert Phillips officiating. Burial will be in Valley View Cemetery with Military Honors by Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard and American District 8 Honor Guard. Memorials are suggested to St Catherine Hospice in care of Garnand Funeral Home. Friends may call from 9:00 AM to 8:00 PM Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home.
