Obituary for Clyde Gardell Beard

Clyde Gardell Beard, age 75, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Saturday, February 17, 2018, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He was born November 28, 1942, in Stafford, Kansas, the son of Clyde E. and Mollie M. (Schilling) Beard.

Gardell loved playing football in high school. He once made the winning touchdown in the last seconds of the game. He also enjoyed running track, jumping hurdles, playing tennis and diving. His interest and love of sports continued throughout his life; he enjoyed watching all sporting events with family and friends. During high school, Gardell helped his parents in their dry cleaning business. He also worked for an auto dealer and a harvest crew during the summer. After graduation from Stafford High School, he attended Emporia State Teachers College. Gardell had a passion for art all his life. He created and sold several metal sculptures, one of which won an award at the El Paso County Art Exhibit at the Fine Arts Center in Colorado Springs. Gardell also loved to read, make knives, shoot pellet guns, did drawings, and woodworking projects. His proudest accomplishment was the two cherry wood jewelry boxes he made for his sister. He had a love of God and Country and earned his Eagle Scout Award. Gardell worked for Halliburton, Houck Brothers Water Well Service, was a carpenter, and helped build the bridge south of Ulysses.

Gardell is survived by his sister, Denise Beard of Ulysses; daughter, Annette Brown of Colorado Springs, Colorado; granddaughter, Victoria Brown of Colorado Springs, Colorado; Aunt Rita Schilling of Seward; Uncle Vernon Schilling of Stafford; and numerous cousins.

Gardell is preceded in death by his parents; grandparents; uncles, Everett Beard, Homer Schilling, and Gail Schilling; and aunts, Helen Hornbaker, Ruth Chesley, Doris Beard, Alline Moulds, and Bertrice O’Berg.

Cremation has taken place. A family inurnment will be held at a later date at Stafford Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be given to the Grant County Scholarship Foundation, American Cancer Society or Ulysses Animal Shelter in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
