Obituary for Helen M. Smith

Helen M. Smith, 84, died Sunday, February 18, 2018 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. She was born June 24, 1933 in Holcomb, Kansas the daughter of Philip & Mary E. (Burgardt) Baier.
Helen grew up in Holcomb where she attended school. On December 10, 1956, she married John A. Smith. A homemaker and professional mother, Helen lived in Kansas and Oklahoma. After the death of her husband in 1977, Helen moved to Garden City where she worked at St. Catherine hospital and as a door greater at Wal-Mart. She was a member of the VFW Auxiliary and the Eagle’s Auxiliary where she served as a past president. Helen loved nature and enjoyed watching squirrels and birds.
Survivors include four daughters Kaye Smith Garbers of Garden City, KS, Pam & husband Hugh Birgenheier of Tacoma, WA, Sandy Biernacki of Timken, KS, and Linda Smith of Overland Park, KS; a sister Virginia & husband Dennis Green of Garden City, KS; nine grandchildren Linda Jo Garbers, Bryan Garbers, Tyler Biernacki, Andrew Biernacki, Colby Biernacki, Kelly Biernacki, Heather Smith, Steven Smith, & Adam Birgenheier; and four great-grandchildren Jayden Grady, Kynzi Grady, Rylee Griffith, & Skylar Biernacki. Helen is preceded in death by her husband John who died on April 10, 1977. She is also preceded in death by her parents; five brothers Edward Baier, John Baier, Andrew Baier, David Baier, & Jim Baier; and two sisters Cathy Baier and Mary Jane Baier.
Funeral Services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at the Chapel at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City. A private family interment will take place at a later date. There will be no calling hours. The family suggests memorials given to Lee Richardson Zoo in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
