Obituary for Dorothy "Dottie" Callender

Dorothy "Dottie"  Callender
Dighton- Dorothy “Dottie” Callender, 95, died on Monday, March 19, 2018 at Lane County Hospital in Dighton. She was born on January 19, 1923 at Bolton, Massachusetts the daughter of Robert & Dorothy (Fosgate) Sanborn. She married Arthur E. Callender on July 9, 1952 at Laramie, Wyoming. He died on May 15, 2011.

At an early age she moved with her adopted Mother, Cora Junkett, to Amherst, Massachusetts where she graduated High School. As a child she enjoyed helping her Uncle in the vegetable garden, she was not allowed in his flower garden though as that was her Uncle’s pride and joy. In 1950 Dottie traveled to Colorado to visit her Sister and this is where she met Art. In 1952 they were married and they had 2 Sons, Artie and Mark. Dottie and Art farmed in the Rinn Community of Colorado until 1997 when they moved to Dighton to be closer to family. Dottie enjoyed playing the piano, swimming with her close friend Bonnie and bowling. Her real love though was her flowers, especially roses. Dottie was a member of the Rinn United Methodist Church and later the United Methodist Church of Dighton. She was a member of the Hoe and Hope Garden Club of Longmont, Colorado and enjoyed entering her flowers in the Boulder County Fair. Along with a small group, Dottie helped to start the Tiny Tim Center in Longmont which offered education and training to children with Cerebral Palsy and other learning disabilities.

She is survived by her Son- Mark & Denise Callender of Dighton, Brother- Norman Colvin of Salem, Mass., 4 Grandchildren- Annie Cizerle, Sam Callender, Jeremy Shull (Sal) and Megan Briggs (Joss) & 3 Great-Grandchildren- Brenna Cizerle, Avery Briggs & Mia Briggs. She was preceded in death by her Parents, Husband, Son- Artie Callender and 3 Sisters- Natalie, Alice & Rita.

Funeral Service will be at 10:30 AM Saturday at the United Methodist Church in Dighton with Rev. Berniece Ludlum officiating. Burial will be in Dighton Memorial Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to United Methodist Church, J.O.Y. Center of the Lane County Community Fund in care of Boomhower Funeral Home. Friends may call from Noon to 8:00 PM Friday at Boomhower Funeral Home in Dighton.
