Mauricia G. Hermocillo (Gallardo), a devoted and loving wife, mother, grandmother, daughter, sister, and friend, died peacefully surrounded by loved ones on March 26, 2018, at Harry Hines Hospice in Wichita, KS at the age of 71. She was born on November 21, 1946, in Villa Hidalgo, Durango, Mexico, to Alejandro A. Sr. and Dominga Juarez Gallardo. Mauricia was united in holy matrimony to Martin Hermocillo on April 8, 1967, in Garden City. She was proud to be Mrs. Martin Hermocillo.
Mauricia led a life of service and caring for others. She worked as a nurse aide at Pioneer Nursing Home in Lakin, KS and at Briar Hill Manor in Garden City, KS. Mauricia turned her care for the aging to caring for children in her home day care for several years. She later returned to work at Garden Valley Retirement Village where she worked as a CNA and an assistant physical therapist. In 1996, Mauricia began work as a Spanish/English interpreter/translator at St. Catherine’s Hospital. She enjoyed her work at the hospital and cherished the many relationships she had made. Mauricia also translated documents for the Finney County Community Health Coalition. In 2014, she retired from the hospital but she continued to serve her community through volunteer work. She was a translator for Kansas Appleseed of Southwest Kansas. Mauricia volunteered at St. Catherine’s Hospital and up until her death she was a volunteer at St. Catherine’s Hospital Hospice. As a devout Catholic, Mauricia co-founded, along with her husband, St. Mary’s Catholic Church Arcoiris Youth Group. She was a great role model for the youth community. Mauricia, along with her husband, led Marriage Preparation Classes as well in their home.
Mauricia’s hobbies included cooking, sewing and crocheting, taking pictures of flowers, creating art projects, and spending time with her grandchildren and family. Mama was protective and loved her family so much. She would say her family was her pride and joy. Mauricia also loved travelling with her husband. They visited many places across the country to see family, friends, or to celebrate their faith. They had plans to travel back to Washington to visit the Space Needle and travel down along the West Coast. In her final days, Mauricia was strong in her faith, asking God to remove the cancer from her body to finally trusting in God to go home with Him. “For to me life is Christ, and death is gain. If I go on living in the flesh, that means fruitful labor for me. And I do not know which I shall choose. I am caught between the two. I long to depart this life and be with Christ, for that is far better.” Philippians 1:21-23
The 50+ years of marriage gifted them with four girls and one boy. Barbara Hermocillo and Diana Jones (Jason), both of Wichita, KS, Catherine McMillen (Hermocillo) and Margaret Hermocillo, both of Garden City; Martin Jesse Hermocillo (Mary) of Houston, TX. Also survived by six brothers, Miguel Gallardo of Meadow, TX, Alejandro Jr. and Nicolas Gallardo of Garden City, Pedro Gallardo of South Carolina, Arturo Gallardo of Florida, and Jose Gallardo of South Dakota; one sister, Antonia G. Laurelez of Garden City, KS; and 6 grandchildren, Andrew Perez, Reagan and Isabella Jones of Wichita, KS, Alyssa McMillen and Lourdes Perez of Garden City, and John Martin Hermocillo of Houston, TX. She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers, Tiofilo, Andres, and Hermerejildo Gallardo and one sister, Priscilla Ibarra of Garden City, KS.
Services will be held at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Garden City, KS. The vigil will be Monday, April 2, at 7pm with the funeral Mass on Tuesday, April 3rd at 11am. Burial will be at Valley View Cemetary immediately following the Mass. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. 7th St., Garden City, Kansas 67846.
