Obituary for Darrell "Pete" Dean Hickey

Darrell Dean “Pete” Hickey, age 85, died Sunday, May 6, 2018, at the Stevens County Hospital in Hugoton, Kansas. He was born November 12, 1932, in rural Meade County, Kansas, the son of William Henry and Florence Irene (Miller) Hickey. He was the sixth child of this family.

Pete lived in Meade until May of 1941, the family moved to Liberal and lived there until 1970, then moved to Hugoton and has lived there since. He graduated from Liberal High School in 1951. He was one of the original members of the Liberal National Guard Unit in 1949, before going on active duty in 1956 to 1959 for the United States Army. Pete married Belva Mae (Freeman) on August 17, 1953. He worked for Western Power Company in Liberal until going to work for Panhandle Eastern Pipeline in 1970 and moving to Hugoton, retiring in 1993. Pete is a member of The Lutheran Church (MS) since 1960. He was a member of Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church of Liberal until moving to Hugoton and became a member of Faith Lutheran Church.

Survivors include his wife, Belva Mae of Hugoton; two sons, Don Hickey and wife Melanie of Amarillo, Texas, and Larry Hickey and wife Pam of Hugoton, Kansas; sister, June Helm of Liberal, Kansas; grandchildren, Jarrod Moser, Amy (Moser) Blackwell, Luke Hickey, Lauren (Hickey) Potter, Laine (Hickey) Copeland, Susan Hickey, and Shay (Hickey) Miramontes, and extended grandchildren, Lalane McClure, Jeremy Ellsaesser, Grace Eisenhour, and Andy Moser; and many great-grandchildren.

Pete is preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Donald and Lloyd; two sisters, Virginia and Marjorie; and daughter, Linda Lea (Hickey) Moser.

Memorial service will be Thursday, May 10, 2018, at 10:30 AM at the First Christian Church in Hugoton, Kansas, with Pastor Andrew Wehling officiating. A family burial will be at Hugoton Cemetery with military rites conducted by Ft. Riley Honor Guard and American Legion 8th District Honor Guard. Friends may call Wednesday, May 9, 2018, from 11:00 AM until 8:00 PM at Garnand Funeral Home in Hugoton.
