Obituary for Howard Lee Lawrence

Howard Lee Lawrence of Shields, KS peacefully passed away on May 16, 2018 at Sheridan County Health Complex in Hoxie KS surrounded by his family, loving staff and friends.
Howard was born in Dighton, KS on November 14, 1937 to Sam and Elsie Lawrence. Howard attended Shields Grade School and Dighton High School. He was a graduate of the class of 1956 where he made lots of lifelong friends whom he kept in close contact with.
On June 25, 1963, Howard Lawrence married Carolyn Joyce Adams of Laverne, Oklahoma who was a school teacher at Pleasant View School in southern Lane County. Three children were born to this union. Kymberly Hop and husband Dan, Rapid City, South Dakota, Stacy Lawrence and wife Angie of Shields, KS and Kamala Ries and Steve of Pueblo, Colorado.
Howard was a member of the Shields and Dighton United Methodist Church. He was a past member of the Lane County Soil Conservation Board. Howard was the recipient of the Outstanding Great Plains Farmer and Rancher Award, The Kansas Bankers Award twice, The Graze Management Award and Outstanding 4-H Achievement for his many years of service.
Howard served as a director on the Farmers Oil Board in Dighton and also the Wilson Township Board.
Howard was a stockman, farmer, and bought and sold cattle for his friends and neighbors.
He later formed a business partnership that remains today with his son Stacy Howard Lawrence.
Howard’s passion was buying and selling cattle and visiting with people. He never knew a stranger and would find a connection with everyone who crossed his path. He loved his livestock and his work in 4-H. He was a member of the Shields Jayhawk 4-H Club where he later served as a Leader. He passed this love on to his children and grandchildren as well as many other children over the years.
Howard had many hobbies, including carving canes out of hedge posts as well as collecting unique canes. He collected pocket watches and pocket knives. He developed an interest in collecting and restoring McCormick Deering and Case IH tractors with his son. One of his favorite restoration tractor projects was a McCormick Deering W-30 which was a replica of the tractor he grew up farming with as a young boy. Later his friend, George Collins and him worked on lots of shop projects throughout the years making toy tractors, benches and various other projects created in their imaginations.
One of Howard’s greatest loves was his love for his family-especially his grandchildren. He spent lots of time with each of them listening, teaching and teasing them all. Howard renamed his grandchildren-Joe (Kameron), Paige (Pearl), Maude (Morgan), Lucille (Leslee), and Mildred (Madison). One of Howard’s famous trademarks was teasing kids often followed by handing them candy.
After his wife Carolyn passed in 2016, Howard stayed on the farm for several months but his continued health issues warranted more medical attention
Howard was blessed to live in the Sheridan County Health Complex Assisted Living unit for the past six months where he made many friends with the residents and staff. His sister, Joy Bretz of Hoxie and her children were much comfort to Howard and his children during this time. Howard greatly enjoyed his time in Hoxie where he loved the people and kept them all on their toes.
Howard is survived by his three children, Kymberly, Stacy, and Kamala, his grandchildren, Kameron Hop, Paige Ries, Morgan Lawrence-Vogel, Leslee Lawrence, and Madison Hop or as Grandpa named them Joe (Kameron), Pearl (Paige), Maude (Morgan), Lucille (Leslee), and Mildred (Madison); sister Joy Bretz of Hoxie and brother Marvin Lawrence of Whitesboro, TX, several nieces and nephews and host of friends.
