Obituary for Connie Hernandez

Connie S. Hernandez, 92, died Saturday May 19, 2018 at St Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. She was born March 1, 1926 in Waukegan, Illinois the daughter of Jose and Leanora (Gurrola) Sanchez.

Connie was born in Illinois, lived in La Junta, Colorado and Cimarron before her family settled in Garden City permanently. She was a freshman in high school when she met the man who would become her future husband. She married Robert Hernandez in September of 1950. He survives. In addition to raising eight children, she kept busy with her nursing career. In the span of her career she worked for the Obstetrics Department at St. Catherine and as a Field Manager for the Finney County Health Department. She was a member of the American GI Forum and St. Mary Catholic Church. Her activism included selfless service to family, the underprivileged, and the faith community. Her hobbies included reading, making sure everyone was well fed at all times, and spending time with her family.

In addition to her husband Robert Hernandez Sr., she is survived by her children-Rita (Mario) Ramos, Richard (Jean) Hernandez, Robert Hernandez Jr., Linda (Deb) Finch, Jerry (Raidene) Hernandez, Sally Hernandez, Chris Hernandez & Rosann (Lynn) Hilliard; Siblings- Ann Delgado & Fred Sanchez; 20 Grandchildren, 24 Great-Grandchildren, 4 Great-Great Grandchildren & numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister- Mary Calderon.

A Rosary will be held 6:30 pm Tuesday May 22, 2018 at Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N 7th Street, Garden City, KS. Friends may call from 10:00 am until Rosary time on Tuesday May 22, 2018 also at Garnand Funeral Home. Funeral Mass will be held at 10:30 am Wednesday May 23, 2018 at St. Mary Catholic Church with Father Charles Seiwert Officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery. Family suggests memorials to Connie Hernandez Memorial Fund. Condolences may be posted at garnandfuneralhomes.com
