George In Early Years

To the Family of George A. Ferguson

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of George Ferguson in your loss.

My first memory and lasting memory of George occurred when I was about nine (9) years old.  I was at the station and Dad had run uptown for a few minutes and I was supposed to watch the business.  In came George to make a purchase picking up something, I don’t remember what, and as was always the case back then George was going 100 mph and he told me what he picked up and away he went.  My responsibility was to write down on a pad in Dad’s office his name and what he purchased.  I knew who George was and understood what he purchased, but my problem was that I didn’t know how to spell his last name, thus I attempted on the pad but with extremely poor results.  When Dad returned to the station he of course checked the pad and of course he couldn’t identify the name I had written and began to question me on who the customer was.  After a short explanation of who the man was Dad was able to determine who I was referring to.  Then he sat me down and spent considerable time teaching me how to spell Ferguson and emphasizing that I had to learn customer’s names and how to spell their names.  Learning to spell Ferguson has never left my memory and my efforts in trying to describe and explain who the customer was.  Think about a young boy about nine (9) years old trying to describe George Ferguson.

Later in life George seemed to slow down and wasn’t always going 100 mph and would come into our office and take time to set down and talk.  I always was able to recognize who was in the lobby of the office when George came without being able to see who it was, from his very memorable and ever present laugh.  He always spoke to other customers and would often wonder through our office talking to the other clerks and employees in the office, always stopping to talk to Karen in her office.  I always enjoyed talking to George, as he always had something on his mind that he would discuss and often his point of view on the subject was unexpectedly different than you would assume.  To be sure George was a very interesting person and his knowledge of many different subjects, especially mechanical, was amazing.

He and his family were very good customers but more than that I enjoyed talking to him about what he was doing.  As he grew older and moved away from farming you could easily see that he missed not just the farming, but being busy doing something.  He was never comfortable when he wasn’t actively involved in a project.

He will be missed by all and his memory will be with me forever.

My prayers and thoughts are with all of the family during this time.
