Obituary for Robert E. "Bobby" Griggs

Robert E. “Bobby” Griggs, 56, died early Saturday morning, August 25, 2018 at Kindred Hospital in Denver, Colorado. He was born January 12, 1962 in Garden City, Kansas the son of Gene Griggs, Sr. and Dorothy (Castoe) Griggs.
Bobby was a graduate of Garden City High School, class of 1980. After high school, he worked as a plumber for a short time. He then attended the police academy, where he graduated in 1990. Bobby was immediately employed with the Finney County Sheriff office. In 1996, he took the opportunity to join the Garden City Police Department where he played an integral role in starting the K-9 program. This show of initiative earned him the 2nd ever officer of the year award and named Top Cop in February of 1999. In 2002, Bobby moved to Douglas County, Colorado to join the Douglas County Sheriff Office where he served as a deputy and a school resource officer. Bobby was still active with the Sheriff office until the time of his death. Bobby enjoyed hunting, range shooting, and he especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends.
Survivors include 3 children Lyndsay (Josh) Plankenhorn of Garden City, Shaina (Eric) Wiens of Phillipsburg, Ks., and Brad Griggs of Garden City; his mother Dorothy Griggs of Garden City; a brother Gene Griggs, Jr. of Garden City; a sister Dixie Misemer of Florida; 4 grandchildren Brayson Plankenhorn, Culden Plankenhorn, Ryder Plankenhorn, & Cade Wiens; 2 nephews; and 1 niece. Bobby is preceded in death by his father Gene Griggs, Sr. and a sister Patty Jo Griggs.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, August 31, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City with Rev. Tod Anthony officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery. Friends may call from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the Douglas County Sheriff Department Fallen Officer Fund in care of the funeral home.
