Obituary for C. Kenneth Minter Jr.

C. Kenneth Minter, Jr., age 91, passed away peacefully on August 27, 2018, at St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City, Kansas. He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Geneva J. Minter of Garden City; daughters Debra R. Peglow (Timothy), Lutherville, MD, Melissa J. Villanueva (LeRoy) and Rebecca L. Heiman (Jon), Garden City; grandchildren, Jonathan T. Heiman, Eric M. Heiman, Katie J. Heiman and Hagen M. Villanueva, all of Garden City and Sarah L. Heiman, Overland Park, Kansas; brother, Jack Minter, Lander, WY; sister, Beverly Dreiling, Garden City.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sisters Marie Messerly and Vanita Nelson and brother, Robert Minter.
Ken was born on August 8, 1927, in Hickok, KS to Clyde Kenneth Minter, Sr. and Cecile Marie Vincent. His family moved several times throughout his young years and settled in Garden City when he was a teenager. In 1945, he graduated early from Garden City High School and with the permission of his parents, enlisted in the United States Navy when he was 17 years old. He received military training as Storekeeper (Supply) Pay Disburser and served in WWII on the destroyer USS McCalla DD488, stationed with the 16th Fleet Headquarters. After the war, he attended Garden City Junior College and Oklahoma University. While in Oklahoma, his dad requested he return to Garden City to work in the family water well drilling business. On March 26, 1949, he married Geneva J. Miller at the First Christian Church in Garden City. In October of 1951 he was recalled to serve during the Korean War and was stationed with the U.S. Naval Air Squadron in San Diego, CA. Additionally, he served in the U.S. Naval Reserves for 9 years and 6 months. He again returned to Garden City and in 1953 established Ken Minter Insurance Agency. He enjoyed serving his clients for over 40 years. He had a passion for real estate, which comprised of commercial construction and investment. In 1991 he expanded his interests and obtained his Certified General Real Property Appraisal license. He retired at the age of 89.
Ken’s great joy in life was serving God and others. He was a longtime active member of the Church of Christ and served as an Elder and mentor for many years. He served the Garden City community as Mayor and Vice Mayor from 1968-1972 and was a member of many planning commissions on both the local and state level. He was a proud member of the American Legion for over 46 years, the Lions Club for 60+ years and the VFW.
Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, September 4, 2018 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City, Kansas, with Minister Darrell Rains of the Church of Christ officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the American Legion District No. 8 Honor Guard and the United States Navy Honor Guard. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 pm on Sunday, 12:00 to 8:00 pm on Monday and 9:00 to 11:00 am on Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home.
