Obituary for Christine Spitz

Looking forward to celebrating her 70th birthday in only four days, Anita Christine (Kimes) Spitz passed away on Friday, October 5, 2018.

Better known by her middle name, Christine was born to Lee and Sara (Sims) Kimes on October 9, 1948 in Biloxi, MS. She grew up in Marshalltown, IA where she graduated from Marshalltown High School in 1966. Her family then relocated to Hastings, NE where she attended Hastings Community College and attained her associates degree in 1968. Christine then passed her boards to become a certified dental assistant.

Christine married the love of her life, Kenneth, on December 18, 1967 in Hastings, NE. Together, their love added nine children to their lives. For 21 years, they made their home in Doniphan, NE where they raised their family. In 1996, Kenneth and Christine relocated to Garden City, KS where Kenneth accepted a position with the FAA. Christine made it her lifelong career and passion to being the best stay at home mother and wife.

As Christine learned more about birthing, breastfeeding, and mothering, she found ways to assist other women in this mission. She became a lay midwife in the 1970s where she helped bring over one hundred babies into this world in the comfort of the mothers' homes. Christine was also an active La Leche League leader for approximately 20 years. Women from all over the country would contact her for breastfeeding and mothering advice. Even after she “retired” from La Leche League and midwifery, her daughters and granddaughter continued to seek much wisdom from her experiences in mothering. Her soft spoken and humble personality had a very special way of quietly leading others.

Christine was preceded in death by both of her parents, her brother-in-law Danny Platt, and her grandson, Micah Clark.

Survivors left to grieve the loss of an amazing woman are: Christine's husband of fifty years, Kenneth of Garden City, their nine children: Rebecca (Albert) Clark of Dannebrog, NE, Christopher (Julie) Spitz of Boise, ID, Daniella (Jim) McChesney of Ogallala, NE, Bathsheba (Dustin) Richardson of Garden City, Elihu (Naveena) Spitz of Stillwater, MN, Samuel Spitz of Boise, ID, Angela (Shawn) Shepard of Quinter, KS, Isaac (April) Spitz of Bemidji, MN and Jerusha (Michael) Ratcliffe, their eighteen grandchildren: James, Hannah, Colton, Sarah, and Noah Clark; Justin, Jeremy (Melissa), and Jolie-Ann Christine Boyll, Ethan Richardson; Sonia and Meena Spitz; Cristian Lopez and Draiman Spitz; Cassandra (Matt) Wertz, Cody and Lea Richardson; Anita Christine and a baby, two great-grandchildren: Liam Wertz and Betty Boyll, and a great-grandbaby on the way. Survivors also include Christine's four siblings: Judy (Dennis) Largent of Hildreth, NE, Elaine Platt of Houston, TX, Jeff Kimes of Flowood, MS, and David (Christine) Kimes of Acworth, GA, along with several nieces and nephews.

Funeral Service will be at 11:00 am Tuesday at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City with Mr. Ed Dowd officiating. Memorials are suggested to Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo in care of Garnand Funeral Home. Condolences may posted at www.garnandfuneralhomes.com
