Obituary for Leonard Yardley

Leonard Yardley, 92, died Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at Homestead Health & Rehabilitation Center in Garden City. He was born December 31, 1925 in Sublette, Kansas the son of Royal “Roy” & Lottie “Pearl” Wheeler.
Leonard moved with his family to the Plymell Community of Finney County when he was 5 years old. He later served in the United States Army from November 9, 1945 to Febraury 14, 1947. After the service, he moved to Garden City and has mostly lived in Garden City since. He began working in construction for 7 years. Leonard then worked for 31 ½ years for Northern Natural Gas Co. He retired at the age of 60. Leonard continued to work in construction. He also worked at Buffalo Dunes Golf course for 13 years and for Larry Johnston Auction for 20 years. He was a member of the Plymell Community Church, the First Christian Church of Garden City, Buffalo Dunes Golf Course, Garden Bowl, Hard Rock Lanes, Finney County Senior Center, and the Buffalo Stompers. Leonard enjoyed bowling, skating, fishing, golfing, going to auctions, square dancing, playing cards and dominos, playing pool and spending time with his family.
On June 1, 1948, he married Kathryn Louise Carroll in Garden City. She survives. Other survivors include 4 children Karen Royce of Phoenix, Arizona; Carol & husband Terry Ochs of Ulysses, Kansas, Vickie & husband Doug Bishop of Ulysses, Kansas, & Steven & wife Sheila Yardley of Garden City, Kansas; 2 sisters Evelyn Tabor of Garden City, Ks and Letha Leeper of Garden City, Ks; 6 grandchildren Windy (Shane) Cruth, Dusty (Christie) Ochs, Sonya (Matt) Chappell, Ronnie (Peggy) Royce, Kristy (Nate) Hale, & Cory (Alicia) Bishop; and 11 Great-Grandchidlren. Leonard is preceded in death by his parents; 2 sisters Viola Warren & Bernice Rolands; and 6 brothers Kenneth Yardley, Virgil Yardley, Delbert Yardley, Curtis Yardley, Gerold Yardley, & Junior Yardley.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, October 13, 2018 at the First Christian Church in Garden City with Rev. Scott Schurle officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery with military graveside rites conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard Honor Guard. There will be no calling hours. The family suggests memorials given to the Finney County Senior Center or to the Alzheimer’s Association both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
