Obituary for Leon E. Young

Leon E. Young, age 81, of Ulysses, Kansas, died Tuesday, October 9, 2018, at his home. He was born June 11, 1937, in Macksville, Kansas, the son of Ralph McKinley and Snowie Mable (Wood) Young.

Leon moved with his family to Ulysses when he was in the second grade, and graduated from Grant County Rural High School. Leon married Mary Jane Nodine on August 25, 1957, in Pawnee Rock, Kansas. He retired from owning and operating Sunflower Lumber Yard. Leon enjoyed attending his grandkids sports activities and dance recitals, woodworking, and was a fan of baseball and football. He was a member of the Ulysses Rotary Club and was a Paul Harris Fellow, served for many years on the Board of Directors for Pioneer Communications, and was a member and deacon at Shelton Memorial Christian Church.

Leon is survived by his children, Kevin Young and wife Anna Lack of Sauk Rapids, Minnesota, Lisa Dasenbrock and husband Larry of Cuchara, Colorado; and Todd Young of Independence, Kansas; sister, Berniece Correll of Hesston, Kansas; three grandchildren, Kevin, MacKenzie, and Kyle; and five great-grandchildren.

Leon is preceded in death by his parents; wife, Mary Jane; sister, Betty Brown; and brothers, Butch Young and Norman Young.

Funeral service will be Friday, October 12, 2018, at 10:00 AM at Shelton Memorial Christian Church in Ulysses with Reverend Kelly Gindlesberger officiating. Interment will follow at Ulysses Cemetery. There will be no public visitation. Memorial contributions may be given to Shelton Memorial Christian Church in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 405 W. Grant Ave, Ulysses, KS 67880.
