Obituary for Philip W. Phillips

Philip W. Phillips, age 76, of Alamo, Texas died November 1, 2018 at Sunrise Senior Living in Frisco, Texas. He was born November 7, 1941 in Dodge City, Kansas the son of Verlan Cecil and Geraldine Margaret (Gill) Phillips.

Phil grew up in Ulysses, Kansas where his parents owned and operated Phillips Mortuary and Phillips Furniture. In 1959 he graduated from Grant County Rural High School where he received State honors playing trumpet. He continued his education at Fort Hays State University and graduated from the University of Kansas Mortuary Science Program. Philip married Jaynelle Wheeler on August 24, 1963, to this union three sons were born, Philip, Patrick and Paul. Phil was a Licensed Funeral Director and Embalmer. He spent many years operating funeral homes in Ulysses, Johnson and Hugoton, as well as operating a flower shop and monument company. Phil retired in September of 1998 and enjoyed traveling and spending time in South Texas and Colorado. Over the years, he was President of the Kansas State Board of Mortuary Arts, Kansas Funeral Directors Association and was a lifetime member of the Jaycees. Phil was also a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, Ulysses Rotary Club, Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus. He was a private pilot and enjoyed playing golf, dancing, snow skiing and jazz music.

Survivors include three sons, Philip J. Phillips and wife Enid of Owasso, Oklahoma, Patrick Phillips and wife Connie of Blanchard, Oklahoma and Paul Phillips and wife Alice of Frisco, Texas, one sister Mari Lisbeth Dobbins and husband Kent of Lawrence, Kansas, eleven grandchildren; Kendra Phillips, Brooke Bentley, Jacob Phillips, Ross Phillips, Rhett Phillips, Colten Phillips, Haley Potts, James Berggren, Ernesto Diaz, Derick Allen and Jennifer Schafer and 6 Great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister; Ann Lynn, wife; Jaynelle Phillips and two foster sisters; Jane Adams and Marilou Jarvis.

Rosary will be Friday, November 9, 2018, 7:00 p.m. Funeral Mass will be Saturday, November 10, 2018, 10:00 a.m. both at Mary, Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Ulysses, Kansas with Reverend Peter Fernandez officiating. Burial will follow at the Ulysses Cemetery, Ulysses, Kansas. Visitation will be Friday, November 9, 2018 from 10:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at Garnand Funeral Home, Ulysses, Kansas.
