Obituary for Charlene Ford

Charlene Ford, 91, died Sunday, April 21, 2019 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, Kansas. She was born August 18, 1927 in St. John, Kansas the daughter of Clarence & Vala (Harley) Piland.

Charlene grew up in St. John where she attended school and graduated from high school. She then moved to Hutchinson for a short time. On January 21, 1951, Charlene married Leon A. Ford in Hutchinson, Kansas. They moved to Garden City in the early 1950’s where they have lived since. Charlene worked for many years for Geier Electric. She later worked at Streeter Cleaners. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Garden City where she was involved in many church activities including, serving as a Sunday School Teacher, helping with funeral dinners, and the Navajo Taco Dinner. Charlene enjoyed sending cards to family and friends, and loved to cook.

Survivors include a daughter Deb Jantz of Pratt, Kansas; a son Eldon & wife Becky Ford of Garden City, Kansas; a granddaughter Heather & husband Matt Nonhof of Garden City, Kansas; and two great-granddaughters Kaylin Nonhof and Eden Nonhof. Charlene is preceded in death by her husband Leon who died on April 14, 2017. She is also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers Roscoe Piland, Raymond Piland, Clarence Piland, & Lyle Piland; three sisters Luella Kelwin, Marcella Engle, & Virginia Allison; and a great-grandson Kenyon Nonhof.

Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, 2019 at the First Christian Church in Garden City with Pastor Phillip Hayes officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City. There will be no calling hours. The family suggests memorials given to the First Christian Church or to Friends of Lee Richardson Zoo both in care of Garnand Funeral Home of Garden City.
