Obituary for Lawrence Glenn Miller

Lawrence Glenn Miller, 85, passed away on Friday, June 14, 2019 at his rural Finney County, Kansas home. He was born August 18, 1933 to Tresmon & Josephine (Williams) Miller in their rural Northwest Finney County home. Lawrence was the fourth of five children. He attended Holcomb schools and St. John’s Military school in Salina, Kansas.

On October 17, 1954, Lawrence married Barbara Jane Jordan at the Community Congregational Church in Garden City. They had four children, Gary, Cheryl, Timothy, and Thomas. Lawrence served for nine years in the Kansas Army National Guard and achieved the rank of Sergeant 1st Class. A lifetime farmer, Lawrence enjoyed being a private pilot, and loved restoring Studebaker cars. He was a 65-year member of the Elk’s Lodge, serving as Exalted Rule and District Deputy. He was active in the American Agriculture Movement, and drove a tractor to Topeka and on to Washington, DC to protest low farm prices and lobby for parity. Lawrence was also a lifetime member of the Eagle’s Lodge, and a 50-year member of the Studebaker Driver Club winning many trophies and awards in car shows.

Survivors include his four children Gary & wife Susie Miller of Garden City, Kansas, Cheryl and husband Kieth Hand of Lawrence, Kansas, Timothy & wife Rebecca Miller of Holcomb, Kansas, and Thomas Miller of Garden City, Kansas; a sister Geneva Minter of Garden City, Kansas; nine grandchildren; and nineteen great-grandchildren. Lawrence is preceded in death by his wife Barbara Jane Miller who died on March 22, 2010. He is also preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Norris Miller, Norman Miller, and John Miller.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, June 21, 2019 at the First United Methodist Church in Garden City with Rev. Tod Anthony officiating. Burial will follow at Valley View Cemetery in Garden City with military graveside rites conducted by the Kansas Army National Guard and the American Legion District #8 Honor Guards. Friends may call from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday and from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday all at Garnand Funeral Home in Garden City. The family suggests memorials given to the Kansas Elks Training Center for the Handicapped (KETCH), or to St. Catherine Hospice both in care of the funeral home.
