Interment: Rolla Cemetery in Rolla, Kansas.

Esther Friend, age 100, died Saturday, October 10, 2009 at Morton County Care Center in Elkhart, Kansas. She was born April 3, 1909 in Winfield, Kansas the daughter of Thomas and Angeline (Knox) King. Esther graduated from Winfield High School in 1928 and attended nursing school in Winfield, Kansas. In 1967 she graduated from Oklahoma Panhandle State University, and went on to earn her Masters Degree in Education from West Texas State University. She worked as a nurse in Elkhart, Kansas. She taught school in Johnson, Kansas. She was also a pastor at the Pentecostal Holiness Church in Hugoton, Kansas and was a traveling evangelist. She enjoyed gardening, canning and playing the piano.

On April 11, 1930 she married George Friend in Dodge City, Kansas. He preceded her in death.

Survivors include two sons, Charlie Friend and wife Dru Ann of Rolla, Kansas, Don Friend and wife Betty of Benson, Arizona; four sisters, Edith Wells of Phillipsburg, Kansas, Inez Foster of Udall, Kansas, Martha Spencer of Winfield, Kansas, Thelma Brown of Lamar, Missouri; two brothers, Robert King of Winfield, Kansas, Ralph King of Wichita, Kansas; three grandchildren, Janice Hollis, Clark Friend, Ryan Friend; four great-grandchildren, Houston Friend, Shome Day, Michiel Friend, Joe Don Friend; and three great great-grandchildren, Zachary Day, Zander Day, and Zayden Day.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; two brothers, Roy King and Raymond King; and one grandson, Carson Friend.
