Fay E. Hatfield, age 90, of Garden City, Kansas died Thursday, November 19, 2009 at Garden Valley Retirement Village in Garden City, Kansas. He was born September 29, 1919 in Rice County, Kansas the son of John C. and Cora (Simmons) Hatfield. |
Fay grew up in Lyons, Kansas and graduated from Lyons High School. After high school he continued working on the family farm. In 1942 Fay enlisted in the United States Army and served his country in World War II. During World War II Fay was stationed in the Aleutian Islands, France and Germany. After being over seas for 27 months he returned to Lyons, Kansas. On December 23, 1945 he married Ellen J. Rife in Lyons, Kansas, she died on March 29, 1989. Fay and Ellen relocated to Greensburg, Kansas shortly after their marriage where he began a 37 year long career for City Service Gas Company. In 1954 they relocated to Garden City, Kansas where he would remain. Fay loved playing golf and later enjoyed going on trips with his companion Mary Lou Salter. Fay would also enjoy playing cards at the senior center. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church, American Legion and the Eagles Lodge. |
Survivors include two daughters, Tracy J. Hoffman of Boise, Idaho and Corla A. Enslow of Sterling, Colorado; three grandchildren and a great-granddaughter. |
Fay was preceded in death by his wife, parents, three brothers; Leonard, Willard and Eldon Hatfield and a sister Marie Fliess. |
The family has requested memorials be given to the Garden City Senior Center in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 412 N. 7th St., Garden City, KS 67846. |
