Jenobeba “Geneva” Hernandez, age 74, died Monday, November 30, 2009 at Kansas Medical Center in Andover, Kansas. She was born January 3, 1935 in Rock Springs, Texas, the daughter of Jesus and Josefa (Chavira) Velardes.
Geneva grew up in Rock Springs, Texas. When she was young she worked in the fields and migrated with the crops. When she was older she was a custodian in the Texas schools. In 1967, Geneva moved to Ulysses and took care of the elderly in their homes and helped cleaned houses. She enjoyed gardening and did a lot of reading.

Survivors include three sons, Martin Hernandez of Ulysses, Kansas, Marcelo Hernandez of Lubbock, Texas, Ruben Hernandez of Ulysses; five daughters, Barbarita Hernandez of Arkansas City, Kansas, Teresa Hernandez of Ulysses, Delia Hernandez of Ulysses, Dora Hernandez of Dodge City, Kansas, Kathy Sandoval of Ulysses, Kansas; one brother, Alvino Velardes of Independence, Kansas; two sisters, Lucia Fargosa of Levelland, Texas, Alicia Gonzales of Levelland, Texas; numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.

Geneva is preceded in death by her parents; three sons, Benito, Jose Jr. and Jessie; two brothers, Jesus Velardes, Rogelio Sanchez; and two sisters, Inez Garcia, Carmen Recio. |
