Funeral Service: 2:00 PM, Monday, January 11, 2010 at United Methodist Church in Dighton, Kansas with Reverend Warren Hett officiating.
Interment: Dighton Memorial Cemetery in Dighton, Kansas.

Walter Owen Herndon, age 79, died Wednesday, January 6, 2010 at Hays Medical Center in Hays, Kansas. He was born September 29, 1930 in Scott City, Kansas the son of William Walter and Thelma Leota (Owen) Herndon.

Walter grew up in the Amy area of Lane County and graduated from Dighton High School in 1948. He attended Ottawa University until entering the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict, serving in the Signal Corp from 1953 until 1955. After his discharge, he attended Kansas State University and Fort Hays State University. He graduated from LeTourneau Institute of Engineering in Longview, Texas where he served as president of the student council. In 1961, he returned to the family farm in Lane County and was a lifelong farmer. Walter's special love was barbershop music and he was two times honored with the International Barbershop Editor of the Year for his writings in the Barbershop Bulletin. Walter was a member of the Amy Baptist Church, Colby Chapter Barbershop Harmony Society, United Methodist Church Choir, Barney Masonic Lodge #279 of Dighton, and past member of the Lane County Hospital Board.

Survivors include his wife Patrycia Ann Herndon of the home; son, Joel S. Herndon of Dighton, Kansas; daughter, Kendra Alana Herndon and husband Nic of Manhattan, Kansas; and sister, Doris Herndon Robb of Dighton, Kansas.

Walter was preceded in death by his parents and brother, James Presley Herndon.
