Visitation: 10:00 A.M. until 5:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at Garnand Funeral Home in Hugoton, Kansas.
Funeral Service: 10:00 A.M., Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at St. Helen Catholic Church with Reverend Pascal Klein officiating.
Interment: Hugoton Cemetery in Hugoton, Kansas with military rites conducted by the Fort Riley Honor Guard.

Vigil service will be held 7:00 P.M. Tuesday, January 26, 2010 at St. Helen Catholic Church in Hugoton, Kansas.

John C. Rome, age 84, died Saturday, January 23, 2010 at Wheatridge Park Care Center in Liberal, Kansas. He was born September 24, 1925 in Morland, Kansas the son of Nick and Pauline (Boxler) Rome. John attended school in Graham County until 1939 when the family moved to the rural Holcomb, Kansas area, where he finished high school. After high school John farmed in Garden City, Kansas until he enlisted in the Army and served during the Korean Conflict. After honorable discharge from the Army, John returned to Garden City to continue farming until 1955. John married Maxyne Y. Johnson on April 18, 1955 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Garden City, Kansas. John and two brothers then moved to a homestead north of Hugoton, Kansas to farm until he retired in 1982. He was a member of the St. Helen Catholic Church in Hugoton, Kansas, Knights of Columbus, VFW Post #5391, Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, and Graybeards. He enjoyed fishing, woodworking, picking and dehydrating apples, and tea parties with his grandchildren.

Survivors include his wife Maxyne of the home; four daughters, Donna Brower and husband John of Moscow, Kansas, Linda Stearns and husband Lenn of Peck, Kansas, Lois Williams of Emporia, Kansas, Laura Luttrell and husband Geff of Ottawa, Kansas; one brother, Tony Rome of Garden City, Kansas; one sister, Patricia Ohmes of Garden City, Kansas; seven grandchildren, Brian Williams, Nick Williams, Dustin Williams, Mandi Stearns, Kaitlin Stearns, Derek Stearns, Carlee Luttrell; two great-grandchildren, James Williams, Loreali Williams; godchildren, nieces, nephews, and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; six brothers, Adolph Rome, Ed Rome, Jerry Rome, Mike Rome, Dave Rome, Pete Rome; five sisters, Mary Rome, Mary Rome, Katherine Ruman, Clara Rome, Ann Scariano; and one granddaughter, Taralyn Stearns.

Memorial contributions may be given to St. Judes Children’s Research Hospital or VFW Post #5391 in care of Garnand Funeral Home, 423 S. Main, Hugoton, KS 67951.
