Grammy passed away on February 23, 2010 at Morton County Hospital in Elkhart, Kansas.

Velma B. Littrel Roberts was born on June 16, 1932 in Chadron, Nebraska to Lloyd and Opal Littrel. She was blessed to marry the love of her life, Wayne Roberts on November 12, 1952 in Chadron, Nebraska. Two daughters were born from this union, Lori Lee and Julie Rae. While the family resided in Nebraska, Gram worked at a bank and taught in the elementary school, but her love was to be home, baking cookies and sewing. In the spring of 1966 the family moved to Elkhart, and assumed ownership of The El Rancho motel, where they lived most of the next 44 years to make it home. From 1966 to 1980 she operated and managed motels in Childress, Texas, McPherson, Kansas, Guymon, Oklahoma, and two different motels with restaurants in Elkhart. Between motel ventures, Gram owned and operated the Ju-Lees Dress Shop, and a baby gift shoppe called “Grammys”. Many of these businesses she ran at the same time. At one given time she was operating two motels and restaurants in Elkhart, a motel in Guymon, and 14 rental properties. One of Grammy’s pearls of wisdom that she often shared with us was, “If I don’t know what to do, I just go to work.” And work she did! After nearly 40 years of being a successful business woman, Gram sold the motel and “retired” (this word is relative!!) The passions of her life after retirement were her grandkids and great grandkids, short road trips with Wayne and scrapbooking. Her love for work never diminished. She just channeled it and helped others get their work done. Grammy had been working diligently on memory albums for each of her grandchildren and could not stop at just one; they all have several cherished albums.

Survivors include her husband Wayne of the home; two brothers, Charles and Donnie Littrel of Chadron, Nebraska; daughters, Lori and Jay D Coen, Julie and Gary Talbert, of Elkhart, Kansas; grand children, Dusty and Tracy Fowler of Turpin, Oklahoma, Michelle and Brett Flory of Wichita, Kansas, Robyn and Brice Kadel of Colorado Springs, Colorado, Nick and Kory Fowler of Scott City, Kansas, Jace Coen of Joplin, Missouri, Marci Priest of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Landon Coen of Manhattan, Kansas, and Sheena Gavin Trahern of Bartlesville, Oklahoma. Great grandchildren include Brooke Cooper, Braxton Fowler, Reagan Fowler, and Riley Fowler. She will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her Grammy and Grampy, her mother Opal, her Father Lloyd and one brother, Melvin.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to “Grammy’s Kids” for underprivileged children or Whistle Stop Park both in care of Garnand Funeral Home P.O. Box 854, Elkhart, Kansas 67950.
