Betty D. Barnes, 82 of Lakin, Kansas died Sunday, February 28, 2010 at her home in Lakin, Kansas. She was born on September 17, 1927 at the “Elk Horn Ranch” in Grant County, Kansas the daughter of John and Suda (Winders) Yohn. |
She attended and graduated from Ulysses High School. On August 14, 1948 she married Lyle Vernon “Barney” Barnes in Spearman, Texas and moved to Kearny County, Kansas where they remained. While in Lakin Betty worked as the Deputy Register of Deeds at the Kearny County Court House for many years, and later at the Kearny County Museum. Betty was also on the Lakin, Kansas Cemetery Board and was the author to Volume 1 and 2 of the Genealogy Books “Diggin” up Bones. She also enjoyed volunteering at the Thrift Shop for many years. Mrs. Barnes was a member of the United Methodist Church, VFW Auxiliary and the Kearny County Historical Society. She enjoyed collecting model railroad trains and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren. |
Survivors include two sons, Duane Barnes of Lakin, Kansas and Gary Barnes of Holcomb, Kansas; two daughters, Mildred “Millie” Fudge of Ashland, Kansas and Linda Knak of Fairview, Oklahoma; a sister, Jane Smith of Liberty Lake, Washington; 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. |
She was preceded in death by her husband Vernon Barnes, her parents, 16 brothers and sisters, and a grandson Brannon Fudge. |
